My work has been with individual adults and with couples who are struggling with life transitions and stress-related problems, depression and anxiety, grief and bereavement, traumatic events of childhood and adulthood, and sexual identity issues. My background and training are in the humanistic and existential psychotherapies, particularly Gestalt therapy. As a result, my work is experiential rather than analytic. I support my clients to be gentle with themselves, to judge themselves and others less harshly, and to explore their thoughts, feelings, and interpersonal behavior with courage.
As my clients become liberated from their habitual reactions and defended postures, they often become interested in developing quality of life, creativity, and spirituality. I offer instruction in mindfulness meditation and other forms of meditation practice to help deepen the foundation of personal change, prevent symptom relapse, and manage stress.
For many years I was the Clinical Director of the Graduate Psychology Program at Antioch University, Santa Barbara, where I trained students in psychotherapy knowledge, skills and practice. Currently I teach a course in Buddhist Psychology at the Fielding Graduate University.
