A psychologist is an expert in psychology, the systematic study of the mind, including
behavior, cognition and affect. Psychologists engage in multiple activities, including
scientific research, teaching, treatment and organizational consultation. Psychologists
work in a variety of settings, such as universities, schools, government agencies,
hospital and health care facilities, private industry and independent practice.
Psychology is a doctoral level profession in which members complete advanced studies
and specialized training before working as psychologists. Psychologists who provide
direct services to consumers, such as in clinical, counseling, or school settings,
are regulated by state licensing agencies. In California, with few exceptions, only
